Dakar
Between tradition and modernity
Located at the western tip of the African continent, on the Cape Verde Peninsula, Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is a crossroads between Africa and the West. Today it stands as the political, economic, and cultural meeting point of West Africa. Dakar is a dynamic city, a symbol of “Africa on the move,” where most of the country’s skills and wealth are concentrated, while also ^facing significant poverty.
Dakar is a city undergoing major transformation, with new buildings under construction and large development projects. Popular neighborhoods such as Médina, Yoff, or Patte d’Oie reflect authenticity and tradition, while the historic Plateau district in the city center features colonial-style architecture. On the island of Gorée, a calm atmosphere reigns, contrasting with the bustling energy of the Senegalese capital.
Dakar, a cosmopolitan city facing the sea
Originally a fishing village of the Lebou and Wolof people, Dakar – once called “Dacar” or “Dahar,” meaning “tamarind tree” in Wolof – was taken over by colonists in the 19th century as the island of Gorée became overcrowded. The city of Dakar then developed, with its natural harbor as its main asset. Thanks to its strategic position and well-sheltered bay, it is currently the third port in the sub-region along with Abidjan and Lagos.
In the Senegalese capital, life happens in the streets and color is everywhere. The mild climate is a real tourist advantage: Senegal is often considered Europe’s winter sun destinatio. This reputation is well deserved, and throughout the year Dakar, the Grande Côte, and the Petite Côte are favored destinations for visitors.
Its youth, its strength
Dakar – the capital of the republic whose first President was a poet – will host the Youth Olympic Games in 2026. In a country where the average age is 20, youth is a force that must be channeled into an asset. Dynamic, educated, and motivated, the young people of Dakar are the driving force behind the Olympic project.
