Brisbane has become the first Australian city to receive Silver Certification in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Cities Global Initiative, recognising Brisbane City Council’s commitment to providing a better quality of life for their residents. The award was given by the UN Habitat Executive Director Maimunah Mohd Sharif.

According to Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, the accreditation solidifies the city’s global reputation as a leading destination focused on sustainability, inclusivity, and accessibility ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. “The SDG Cities Global Initiative is a way of benchmarking and tracking our progress towards the SDGs within a global framework. Silver is the first level of accreditation, and recognises we are on a journey with other cities around the world to achieve the SDGs at local level,” Cr Schrinner said. “We are one of only six cities globally to receive this accreditation and it’s a testament to Council’s continued focus on creating a brighter future for our residents. We’re a city that has clear goals to create a more liveable tomorrow and sustainable future through projects such as our Natural Waterway Rehabilitation program, Green Bridges initiative and the fully electric Brisbane Metro, creating world-class public and connected active transport. As Host City for the 2032 Games, we are committed to taking real and practical action to help achieve the International Olympic Committee’s Olympism 365 goal of strengthening the role of sport as an important enabler for the SDGs.” To learn more, click here!
