September 2026
2026 marks the fifth anniversary of Tokyo 2020. Commemorative events were held across Tokyo, celebrating the power of sport to bring people together.
The Games were a watershed moment for sport in the city. Sports participation reached 67.5% in 2025, with a target of 70% by 2030. The Metropolitan sporting facilities built for the Games have become valued community assets, hosting not only major sporting events but also a wide range of local activities. One example is Ariake Arena, the Tokyo 2020 venue for volleyball and wheelchair basketball. Through collaboration among the facility, local schools, a local wheelchair basketball club, and a major company, wheelchair basketball programmes are regularly held where children with and without disabilities play together in wheelchairs.
People remain part of the legacy. They helped deliver the World Athletics Championships and the Deaflympics, both held in Tokyo in 2025. In 2028, the Olympic spirit will return to Tokyo through the Olympic Q-Series. Looking ahead, Tokyo will continue to share dreams with people around the world and advance a more inclusive society.
