Tribute to Daniel Brélaz

January 2026

It is with deep sadness that the World Union of Olympic Cities announces the passing of Daniel Brélaz, former Mayor of Lausanne, Co-Founder and President of Honour of the World Union of Olympic Cities.

On behalf of all members, we extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family, his loved ones, and to the people of Lausanne, to whom he was profoundly attached. Daniel Brélaz played a decisive role in shaping Lausanne’s international identity and in strengthening its position as the Olympic Capital. Convinced that cities are key actors in global dialogue, he tirelessly promoted inter-city cooperation as a force for innovation and sustainable development.

As Mayor of Lausanne from 2001 to 2016, he was one of the principal architects of the creation of the World Union of Olympic Cities, which he envisioned as a lasting platform for cooperation among Olympic host and candidate cities around the world. His belief in the power of cities to work together beyond borders remains at the very heart of our mission. His commitment to this international vision continued well beyond the end of his term as Mayor. In recognition of his unwavering dedication, the Union proudly appointed him President of Honour upon his departure from office in 2016.  The World Union of Olympic Cities expresses its deepest gratitude for Daniel Brélaz’s leadership, vision and lifelong engagement. His legacy will continue to inspire the network and guide its work.
